Vehicle data providers, compared honestly

Ten automotive data providers side by side, by the job each one is actually good at. Prices checked on each vendor's own site on October 3, 2026.

"Vehicle data" covers at least five different products that happen to share a name: decoding a VIN, looking up a number plate, getting specs and trims, pulling dealer listings and prices, and knowing which makes and models exist at all. Most automotive data providers are very good at one or two of those and quiet about the rest.

We're one of the providers on this list, so take this page for what it is: our honest read, with sources. Where another vendor is the better fit, we say so. Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked on October 3, 2026; prices change, so click through before you sign anything.

NHTSA vPIC

The free US government API. It decodes VINs from the manufacturers' own filings and lists makes and models, without a key. Its limit is in its source: it only knows vehicles filed for the US market, so the Dacia Sandero, the Škoda Octavia and the VW Polo aren't in it. We wrote a full guide to the NHTSA API, with working calls and the limits measured.

Pick it when: you need US VINs decoded and the price must be zero.

CarAPI

A developer-friendly US car API: year, make, model and submodel back to 1900, trims and specs from 1990, and US VIN decoding on the Premium plan. Plans are yearly: $199 (1,500 calls a day), $249 and $299 (6,000 calls a day, trims and VIN). There's a free sample data set that needs no account. Powersports and plate lookups are sold separately.

Pick it when: your users are in the US and you need trims and specs on a small budget.

CarsXE

A broad API: VIN decoding (it claims "any VIN worldwide"), specs, plate decoding "across 50+ countries", history, market value, images and OBD codes. The sandbox gives 100 lifetime calls. Starter is $40.83/month and Pro $207.50/month, both billed annually; history, market value and lien checks are pay per call on top.

Pick it when: you want many data types from one vendor, including international VINs and plates.

Auto.dev

VIN decoding, vehicle listings and photos, with specs, recalls and payments on paid plans. The free plan gives 1,000 calls a month with no card. Growth is $299/month and Scale $599/month, plus per-call data fees (a global VIN decode is $0.0025 on Growth, OEM build data $0.10). Budget for both parts of that price.

Pick it when: you need listings and VIN data together and your volume justifies usage pricing.

MarketCheck

The listings specialist: dealer inventory scanned from over 100,000 dealer websites in the US, Canada and the UK (their figure), plus VIN decoding, price predictions and history. Free gives 500 calls a month; Basic is $299/month and Standard $749/month, plus data fees per call (inventory search $0.002, MarketCheck Price from $0.07).

Pick it when: you're building a marketplace, pricing tool or dealer product that needs live inventory.

Vehicle Data Global

The UK option: number plate (VRM) lookups on DVLA data, MOT history, tyre and battery data, valuations, specs and options, write-off and finance checks. Prepaid credit starts at £50; monthly plans run from £99 to £1,995 (ex VAT), with per-lookup prices that fall as you commit more (DVLA vehicle data from £0.15 down to £0.01).

Pick it when: your users type UK number plates.

Vincario

A VIN decoding specialist with "extended support of European and North American vehicles", plus market value and stolen-vehicle checks. Three free lookups a month, no card; paid plans are monthly, charged per lookup, and invalid VINs aren't charged. Their plan table renders in the browser, so check the pricing page directly for current numbers.

Pick it when: you need to decode European VINs.

vehicledatabases.com

A catalog of 25+ APIs on a shared credit system: basic and premium VIN decoding, a Europe VIN decoder, UK registration and US plate decoding, specs, market value, title, stolen and recall checks. Monthly packages run from $100 (500 credits) to $2,500 (50,000 credits); vehicle history reports are priced separately per report.

Pick it when: you want many US data types behind one account.

auto-data.net

A large specifications database (over 350 brands and 55,000 specifications by their own count) with an API sold by quote: you pay for the parameters you choose. More than half of the records are European cars. No VIN decoding or plates.

Pick it when: you need detailed specs per generation and engine, especially for European cars.

VehiclesDB

That's us. What we do: the identity layer. 15,068 vehicle models across 934 makes, for cars, motorcycles, mopeds, vans, trucks and buses, reconciled from official vehicle data in 18 countries: the national registration registers of Argentina, Australia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, the vehicle register of the Swiss canton of Thurgau, plus the official fuel economy listings of the United States (fueleconomy.gov) and Canada (Natural Resources Canada). The make and model list is a free download under CC-BY 4.0; the API adds search, a free make and model dropdown, enriched records, license plate formats for 124 jurisdictions, and a resolver that turns messy strings like MERCEDES-BENZ | 300 TDT into canonical ids with an audit trail.

What we don't do: VIN decoding, trims and specs per year, listings, valuations or history. If you need those, one of the vendors above is the right call.

Pricing is flat: 100 free credits to start, then $49, $299 or $999 a month with the calls included and no per-call data fees.

Pick it when: your users aren't only American, you need motorcycles or trucks from the same source, or your real problem is a column of vehicle names nobody has cleaned.

Automotive data providers in Europe

Most of the vendors above started in the US, and it shows in their coverage. If your vehicles are European:

  • VIN decoding: Vincario focuses on European and North American VINs; CarsXE and vehicledatabases.com also sell European decoders. A VIN filed only for Europe won't decode in NHTSA vPIC.
  • Number plates: Vehicle Data Global for the UK (DVLA), with Ireland and Spain add-ons. Elsewhere in Europe, what a plate lookup can return depends on each country's rules, so check provider by provider.
  • Specs: auto-data.net, where more than half of the records are European.
  • Make and model lists across countries: VehiclesDB, built from the registers of the Netherlands (RDW), the UK (DfT), Spain (DGT), Germany (KBA), Finland (Traficom), Luxembourg, Ireland and Ukraine, among others. Free to download.

How we measure our own error rate

Any provider can say its data is accurate. We'd rather show you the number, including the part that isn't flattering.

We run seeded, stratified audits where the person checking a record is never the person who researched it, and anything that can't be verified counts as an error. At the baseline round (July 26, 2026, cars, vans, trucks and buses), availability claims were about 99.5% clean when checked against the registers themselves, makes about 96% and kinds about 97%. The weak spot was names and ids: the overall claim-level clean rate was 83.23%, and most of those defects came from two systematic causes we've been fixing since. The next audit round measures whether the fixes worked; we don't claim it in advance. The whole report, with confidence intervals and every audit ledger, is on our data quality page.

We don't know of another provider on this list that publishes a measured error rate. If you're evaluating one, it's a fair question to ask them.

Try it on your own data

If you have a pile of vehicle strings (policy lines, registry rows, marketplace titles) and want to know how many we can match, there are two ways:

  • Yourself, free: create a key, and the first 100 resolve calls cost nothing. The getting started guide takes five minutes.
  • We do it for you: the Resolve Audit. We batch clean up to 100,000 rows of your own data and send back a match rate report, the resolved_via audit trail for every row and the cleaned file, with 60 days of our Scale plan included. It's $1,990, one time, and we agree the scope in writing first. Talk to us.
