Thailand license plates

21 registration series, sourced from (Department of Land Transport, DLT), Ministry of Transport.

Thailand runs two plate systems under two Acts that share no serial space or colour scheme. The Motor Vehicle Act plate is Thai-script: two category letters and up to four digits over the province spelled out in Thai — no code, the name itself. The Land Transport Act plate, for buses and licensed trucks, is the opposite: THAILAND plus numeric codes, entirely numeric end to end. Colour alone tells private from for-hire: black-on-white is an ordinary car, black-on-yellow a metered taxi, green-on-white the pickup that outnumbers every other body style on Thai roads.

Worth knowing

The plate that is illegal to drive on at home

Thailand issues a Latin-script plate solely for vehicles crossing into neighbouring countries — and fitting it inside Thailand itself is an offence with a fine of up to 2,000 baht. The Thai plate goes back on before the car re-enters the country that issued it.

DLT press release no. 75, 18 March 2011

A regulation exists because Thailand ran out of trucks

The 2011 commercial-plate announcement's own preamble states its cause in one sentence: the truck code band 60–69 was "nearly used up", so 70–79 had to be opened. The plate on a Thai flatbed has that shortage written into its numbering.

The night-driving red plate

Thailand's famous red dealer plate comes with a curfew from the statute itself: a car under it may only be driven between sunrise and sunset without the registrar's separate permission.

Motor Vehicle Act B.E. 2522

standard plates 6

the default series issued to private road vehicles

Private car

The ordinary Thai car plate: two category letters and up to four digits in black, over the vehicle's province spelled out in full underneath — retroreflective white, embossed edge to edge.

The two letters name the issue series — the first runs in blocks tied to the vehicle class — and Thais recite them by their letter names: a กข plate reads aloud as "chicken, egg". The bottom line spells the registering province out in full; no code table needed.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car

Private car 7+ seats

Same letter machinery as the sedans, in the van-series blocks — Bangkok's are reported under น, ฬ, อ and ฮ: mouse, kite, basin, owl in the recited names. Blue characters, not the letters, legally mark the more-than-seven-seat class.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: van, bus

Private pickup

Green characters carry the legal meaning; the letters carry the story. Bangkok pickup series are reported under ฒ, ณ, ต, ถ, บ, ป, ผ, ย, ร and ล — old man, novice monk, turtle, sack, leaf, fish, bee, giant, boat and monkey, in the recited letter names.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: truck

Private three-wheeler

Red characters mark the private three-wheeler; the two letters are ordinary series machinery — a class-tied first letter, a second that advances as numbers exhaust — with the province spelled out beneath, never coded.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: tricycle

LTA public yellow

The plate on every intercity bus and licensed truck: THAILAND and a numeric province code above a type code and a serial that must print its leading zeros — the reverse of the usual convention.

The first two digits are a statutory vehicle-type code: 10–19 fixed-route buses, 20–29 small-vehicle transport, 30–39 non-scheduled (charter) buses, 60–69 and 70–79 hired trucks — the 70s exist because the 60s nearly ran out, and the instrument says so itself.

10-19
70-79
รถบรรทุกไม่ประจำทาง — non-scheduled goods transport — the band added in 2011 when 60–69 neared exhaustion

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: bus, truck

LTA private white

Same statutory code table, private half: 40–49 private buses, 50–59 and 80–99 private trucks. The type code predicts the ground colour exactly — a code starting 4, 5, 8 or 9 must be white and privately operated.

40-49

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: bus, truck

motorcycle plates 1

reduced-size series for motorcycles where format/design differs

Motorcycle private

Three lines: series letters with a leading numeral that is part of the base motorcycle format (cars only earn theirs on exhaustion), the province in the middle, digits below. One town outranks its province — a plate registered at Betong reads เบตง, never ยะลา.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: motorcycle

agricultural plates 1

farm vehicles/equipment where separately serialized

Agricultural orange

Orange ground covers road rollers, tractors and farm machines; the two letters are the standard class-tied series pairs, the province is spelled out beneath. The one plate family also excused from the windscreen tax sticker.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: tractor, machine

taxi plates 6

for-hire vehicles where separately serialized or colored

Taxi

Yellow ground, black characters: the metered taxi. Bangkok's taxi letter pairs famously open with ท — the letter recited as "soldier" — running ทค, ทง and onward. The category lives in the colours; the letters just count the fleet.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car

Interprovincial taxi

Red characters on yellow are the whole legal decode — an inter-provincial hire car. The two letters are series machinery, and the bottom line names the registering province in full.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car

Tuk-tuk

Green-on-yellow says tuk-tuk; the series letters are reported to be just three pairs — ศข, สก and สข: "pavilion-egg", "tiger-chicken", "tiger-egg" in the recited letter names. Scarcity on the plate to match the vehicle.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: tricycle

Small four-wheel hire

Navy characters on yellow mark the small shared four-wheeler — the songthaew class. The letters mean sequence, not category; the colour pair does the classing, the province line the geography.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car

Service green

The green ground is the decode — business, tour and rental service cars, the plate a visitor sees on hotel shuttles and hire cars. The two white letters carry no category of their own; they just walk the series forward, with the province written below.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, van, bus

Motorcycle public

Yellow says motorcycle taxi; the three-line layout stacks series letters, then the province, then the number. The letters mean sequence, never place — Thai plates spell geography out rather than coding it.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: motorcycle

trailer plates 1

trailers and semi-trailers where separately serialized

Trailer orange

Same orange ground and same letter machinery as the agricultural classes — series pairs plus a spelled-out province. Nothing in the characters says "trailer"; the registration class carries that.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: trailer

personalized plates 1

owner-chosen serials inside an official frame

Auction graphic

Here the digits are the meaning: ten statutory families of "desirable" numbers — repeats, round thousands, ascending runs, mirrored pairs — must go to public auction by law. All-nines fetch fortunes partly because เก้า, "nine", echoes ก้าว, "to move forward".

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

2003 → today issued for: car, truck, van

dealer plates 1

trade/garage plates bound to a business, not a vehicle

Trade red

The red trade plate a dealer bolts on to move a car that isn't registered yet — and the one Thai plate that comes with a curfew written into the statute that created it.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

1979 → today issued for: car, truck, van, motorcycle

temporary plates 2

short-validity plates (transit, awaiting registration)

International English

LL-999

The Latin letters are the same registration in travel clothes: a DLT transliteration of the vehicle's Thai series letters, above the word THAILAND. Fit it for Laos or Yunnan; keep it on at home and the plate itself becomes a 2,000-baht offence.

In the sample, L stands for any letter and 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, truck, van, bus

Test TC/QC

LL-9999

In the sample, L stands for any letter and 9 for any digit.

2017 → today issued for: car, motorcycle

diplomatic plates 2

diplomatic corps (embassy) issuance, usually its own decode

Diplomatic

9999

ท tracks ทูต, "diplomat", and the white ground alone separates it from the light-blue consular fleet. The numerals code the sending country — a list never published. Bangkok taxis also famously run under ท; layout and colour, not the letter, tell them apart.

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, motorcycle

Diplomatic 270×90 mm

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, motorcycle

consular plates 2

consular corps where distinct from diplomatic

Consular

9999

The letters track the key word of each category: ก for the consular corps (กงสุล), พ for an embassy's special agencies (พิเศษ), อ for international organisations (องค์การ). The numerals beneath code the sending country — a list the DLT has never published.

หน่วยงานพิเศษของสถานทูต — special agency of an embassy

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, motorcycle

Consular 270×90 mm

In the sample, 9 for any digit.

~2011 → today documented from 2011 — the format is likely older issued for: car, motorcycle
