Black plate
Even in the black era the leading letters were geography — the code of the registering authority, W for Wien. The digits are a plain running number, and the dot enthusiasts draw between them ("W 123.456") appears in photos but never in the statute.
In the sample, 9 for any digit; the other characters are fixed.
~1968–1990
documented from 1968 — the format is likely older
issued for: car, van, truck, bus, motorcycle, trailer
Standard pre-EU
District letters first — one for a state capital (W Wien, G Graz), two for a rural district (IL Innsbruck-Land) — then a meaningless serial that must end in a letter. Today's decode exactly, minus the blue EU corner.
In the sample, L stands for any letter and 9 for any digit.
1989–2002
issued for: car, van, truck, bus, trailer
Standard
The everyday Austrian plate: district letters, Land arms, then the number — issued to cars, vans and trucks alike.
The leading letters name the district: state capitals get one letter (W Wien, I Innsbruck), rural districts two (IL Innsbruck-Land, GU Graz-Umgebung). The serial means nothing, but the law makes it end in a letter — the quiet tell separating private plates from digits-only official ones.
In the sample, L stands for any letter and 9 for any digit.
